Configuring Macs with FreePPP

1. An Introduction to FreePPP

FreePPP is a Macintosh-only internet dialer that does the same job as ConfigPPP or Remote access. FreePPP can be used with almost any Mac operating system, and it is often used as an alternative to either ConfigPPP or Remote Access. You can download FreePPP here.

 

 

2. How to find FreePPP setup

You can confiure FreePPP using a program called FreePPP Setup, To find this program, make sure Finder is selected from the application menu in the upper-right corner of the screen, and choose Find from the File menu.

In the blank next to "Name" and "Contains" type "FreePPP". Then click find. This should display several files in the window below, and one of them should be called FreePPP Setup. Double-clicking on this file should bring the FreePPP Setup window to the front.

Make sure the window is fully extended by clicking on the little blue triange on the left side of the screen

 

3. Setting up the LISCO accout

Highlight the "Untitled" account and click the Edit button, or click the New button.

In the Account Name field, type Lisco, and choose Directly from the Connect drop-down menu.

In the User name field, type your username.

In the Password field type your password.

 

4. The Dialup settings

Click the Dialup tab to show the dialing settings.

Leave the Area Code blank and type the correct phone number for your area (without an area code) in the Phone number field.

Then click the Options tab.

 

5. Setting the Account Options

The domain name should say:

lisco.com

The Primary DNS should say:

69.18.32.50

The Secondary DNS should say:

69.18.32.51

Put a check in the check box that says Configure OT TCP/IP for this account.

The IP Address should have Assigned by PPP server selected.

Click OK here.

 

6. The Area Code Warning

You should see a warning that asks if you want to leave this account without an area code.

This is normal, choose Yes.

 

7. Selecting a modem

Back in the main FreePPP window, choose the Modems tab. This should display a list of modems with one item: Generic Modem

 

8. Setting up the modem

Leave the Modem config name as Generic Modem or change it to LISCO if you like.

The Connected to: menu should reflect the way that your modem is connected to your computer. If yours is an internal modem, choose Internal Modem. If yours if an external modem plugged into the Modem port, choose Modem Port.

For the port speed, choose 57600 bps. Choosing a higher port speed does not increase the speed of your connection.

Choose CTS & RTS (DTR) for flow control.

Check only Speaker enabled and Hangup on disconnect.

Click OK.

 

9. Connecting to LISCO

This concludes the LISCO settings. To connect to LISCO you should be able to either:

Open your browser (such as Netscape or Internet Explorer)

or

Open your Email Client and attempt to download your mail.

If you would like to connect manually, open FreePPP Setup and click connect.
