What
you should know
about RDSL
RDSL
service is delivered over a standard telephone line. Many factors influence
the delivery and performance of this product.
We
encourage you to familiarize yourself with the following information
so that you know what to expect during the provisioning process!
How
DSL works
RDSL
uses proprietary technology to put data on your POTS
telephone line. High frequencies carry data, and the lower frequencies
carry voice conversations. Thus you're able to talk on the phone and
surf the Internet at the same time.
LISCO
works with the telephone company to provide you with this service.

Telephone
lines
Not
all telephone lines can support RDSL service. LISCO will pre-qualify
your line for you before you order service.
You
will be contacted by email with your results,
after you submit a pre-application with us by phone. Please feel free
to call us if you have questions about them.
NOTE:
The
pre-qualification is a preliminary finding, because, although rare,
a passing line may later be discovered to be unsuitable.
Data
noise
When
you order DSL, you’re authorizing us to place data on your telephone
line. Data uses the high frequency portion of your circuit, and noise
from it will be audible on all your extensions.
To
remove this noise, you will need to install noise
filters on each extension of the line your DSL is on. If
you order your modem from LISCO, it will come with two noise filters
included.
Phone
wiring
The
portion of your phone line tested is the portion between your house
and the telephone switch. The wiring inside your house is not tested.
Please
remember that LISCO is not responsible for the condition or suitability
of the telephone wiring inside your location.
NOTE:
Some wiring, which is fine for a normal telephone, will become very
noisy when DSL is added to the loop. For a few customers, the services
of a qualified telephone wiring professional is needed. Extra wiring
expenses are not included in the fees you pay to LISCO for your DSL
service.
Other
Considerations
We
recommend that DSL be ordered on line 1 of any multi-line jack, for
ease of installation.
DSL
will work on a line that goes through a phone system like a PBX or KSU,
but additional inside wiring may be required at your own expense.
Computers
and network equipment
Your
computer will need to have an Ethernet (NIC)
card installed. You can get one by calling your computer manufacturer
or local computer store, or from us.
You
are responsible for setting up and maintaining your LAN
(local area network). We will help you troubleshoot it over the phone
if you are having trouble related to your RDSL connection, but please
bear in mind that we cannot possibly be familiar with every type and
configuration of equipment out there!
We
sell a variety of LAN equipment, like NIC cards, hubs, firewalls, and
more! Just visit the Store
section of this website, or give us a call.

Viruses
and firewalls
We
strongly recommend that you keep your network protected by both a firewall
and by virus protection software. With a DSL, you are always connected
to the Internet, and that makes you more vulnerable to attack.
If
your data is mission critical, you not safe on a DSL connection without
a firewall and virus software!
Software
firewalls are recommended for single-computer networks, and hardware
firewalls are recommended for those of you with more than one computer
on your DSL connection.
NOTE:
Virus
software and firewalls are not included in your RDSL service fees.
